Like Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, E. Franklin Frazier’s Black Bourgeoisie examines desire, i.e., the yearning to escape birthright conditions, the itch to touch refinement and glamor. Unlike Flaubert, Frazier challenges the landings of the 1950s, holding the black middle-class to the highest standards.
