Not here

Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary gives us an unremarkable heroine bored with her unremarkable marriage to her besotted doctor-husband. She appears young, yearning, window-framed, craving drama and seduction. When the family story ends, we feel for the boy with the amputated clubfoot and the child-daughter, Berthe.
