Our modern age

According to Hannah Arendt’s The Human Condition, three great events propelled us into the modern age: the conquest of the Americas, the Protestant Reformation, and the invention of the telescope. The last, by leading us to picture cosmos while remaining rooted on earth, triggered momentous spiritual malaise. As doubt substituted for wonder, the earth became less mother than planet and geography.
